The loco is a London & South Western Railway Adams radial tank, number 0487, which was recorded on the Fortrose branch in 1919, according to Cormack & Stevenson, the same year that all the Radials were returned to the LSWR having been borrowed to cover a shortage of Highland locos during the war, so we have dated the photo as 1919. The station master is in Highland Railway uniform (the HR can be made out on his hat). It's a great photo!
the station master is my grandfather james arthur riach.he moved to kyle of lochalsh just before WW2,then to aviemore 1941, and 1943 to stranraer harbour from where he retired to inverness around 1952.He had been station master at avoch before moving to fortrose
