Comments:
This photo is of Fortrose Academy Primary 4 and 5 pupils in the school year 1950-51. The class teachers were Miss Cameron (P5)and Miss Noble (P4). At that time, P5 was the final year of the Primary and known as "The Quallie" because it was the year in which we took the Qualifyling Exam for the Secondary. Depending on results, we then went on to take Latin and French, French only, or no language in two "streams", 1A or 1B. In actual fact, the groups were combined for most subjects right through to 3rd year when most people left aged 15. The number of pupils in the year group would have been about 30, I suppose. In the Secondary we were joined by pupils from Munlochy, Avoch and Cromarty Primaries who were taking languages. The latter two still had Junior Secondary provision.
So the pupils in this photo all came from Fortrose, Rosemarkie and the local country areas. Names I remember are:
Back Row, L to R: Hugh Donnelly, Douglas Owens, James Thompson, Tom Grant, George Elder, Gregor Grant, Donald Macdonald, Tom McLean, Ian Basham, Hamish Bisset.
Middle Row, L to R: Malcolm Thomas, William Jack, Murdoch MacPhail, Bill McLean, Anne McIver, Norma Shaw, unknown, John Goodall, Billy Macpherson, Gregor Whyte, Billy Hossack.
Front Row, L to R: unknown, Janice MacKay, Marlene Donnelly, June Sutherland, Esme Macpherson, Jennifer Coutts, unknown, Jessie Macdonald, Jean Fowler, Kathleen ?
Apologies to the "unknowns"!!

Ian Basham is very wel informed! Shame he can't remember where our TV remote is now! (Only joking - from his Loving Daughter, Katharine - lovely to see such a clear picture, it would be interesting to know which bit of the current Fortrose school housed the primary bit)

Where was the school in Rosemarkie? I went to Fortrose Academy and can't
recall a school in the village. Or is this simply Rosemarkie children at
Fortrose Academy?

The old Rosemarkie Primary School was on Court Hill Road (the "Back Road") - it and the attached school house now being private housing. It closed in 1932 when Rosemarkie children transferred to Fortrose. As I noted above, the photo is of Primary 4 & 5 at Fortrose Academy and includes Rosemarkie pupils. Thanks, Billy, for aiding my memory and apologies to Kathleen!

These are NOT Rosemarkie schoolchildren. This was a primary class at Fortrose Academy admittedly comprising some childrem from Rosemarkie and indeed beyond
